Vaughan Giose, producer for Ikon South Africa and David Aronowitsch, one of the project founders of Story AB, visit Tempo to discuss how, through workshops, hard work and not least through collecting hundreds of ideas from all over South Africa, have assisted a number of film projects to reach a large South African and international audience. Besides this official visit, the founders of Ikon Sweden and Story AB meet young black filmmakers from the townships. Friendships developed, which led to the establishment of a platform for emerging filmmakers with important stories to tell.

During Tempo a retrospective of films from Ikon South Africa will also be shown.

How do you approach the German/French broadcaster ARTE with an idea for an international co-production? Can you make a documentary for the international audience, where your main characters are ’speaking poetry’? What kind of documentaries work on the international market? These and many other aspects will be covered at MARATHON DOC, which is organised in collaboration with EDN.
The Swedish documentary film festival Tempo is putting a focus on the documentary film industry by organising the two day seminar Marathon.doc. The last day of this seminar will be focusing on international co-production of documentaries.

The last day of Marathon.doc will bring important players from the European documentary scene to share knowledge and information with the Swedish documentary sector about cross-border co-prodution of documentaries. For the 2009 edition you will meet Commissioning Editor Peter Gottschalk from ARTE and Director Brian Hill.

Peter Gottschalk is a commissioning editor at Unite Documentaires at the ARTE G.E.I.E. This central office of ARTE, located in Strasbourg, is responsible for the editorial line of programmes, the programme schedule and the broadcast. ARTE G.E.I.E. delivers 542 hours of programming a year: current affairs, information and theme evenings.

ARTE was launched in 1991 with the intention to create a new specifically European television culture. Documentaries represent about 40% of total programming or approx. 500 hours annually; not including the strand Thema, which is thematically evenings three times a week, including documentaries ARTE transmits by satellite, cable and terrestrial network and is financed by license fees.

The storytelling tools and approaches in the British director Brian Hill’s documentaries are often unconventional and constructed. But for Hill these staged scenes are a natural choice and element in order to describe reality in the best and most precise way.

Brian Hill is the managing director of Century Films and directs both drama and documentary. He has made over 60 films for the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV, many of which have won awards from the British Academy of Film and Television, and the Royal Television Society, including his landmark films with poet Simon Armitage, which saw a development of the documentary musical.

    The programme for Marathon.doc is:

    10:00 - 12:00 How to Co-produce with ARTE?
The German/French broadcaster ARTE is one of the most important players on the European market for documentary. However, finding the right contact and way in at the station can be difficult and hard to navigate. During this session Peter Gottschalk from ARTE will explain the structure of the broadcaster, what kind of slots are broadcasting what kind of documentaries and who to contact in relation to certain themes and content. Included in the session will be examples of recently documentaries broadcasted by ARTE.

    12:00 - 13:00 Lunch

    13:00 - 14:30 Screening: The Not Dead
During this master class, which will be based on the screening of The Not Dead, Brian Hill will talk about his approach to storytelling in documentary film, how he is working with staged scenes and how he makes documentaries, which are appealing for an international audience.

    14:30 - 15:00 Break

15:00 - 16:30 Master Class with Brian Hill

What happens when the newsfeed’s cameras are switched off? The Online Documentary Project From Zero depicts the aftermath of the earthquake, which devastated the mountain region of Abruzzo in Italy in April 2009. In sharp contrast with the sensational images that the mainstream news outlets broadcast, this project described, through observations of the minutest details, the slow reconstruction of a community.

Meet Stefano Strocchi, producer and founder of the project. During this masterclass, he will discuss how the project developed, together with the specific advantages and limitations that the online documentary format offers.

This seminar is arranged in collaboration with EDN – European Documentary Network with support of the Italian Cultural Institute.

    The Power Over the Picture

Which principles are our impressions of Africa based upon, and who or what influences them? This discussion will explore what the ‘power over the picture’ involves, in relation to the festival’s main theme: Africa Update. Twenty-one documentaries from different countries in Africa have been selected, which together offer a portrayal of the complex nuances of the contemporary situation on the continent.

The seminar participants have been invited due to their extensive knowledge and direct experience with these questions. They include Victoria Kawesa, PhD researcher in gender studies at Linköping University, Stefan Jonsson, author and journalist for Dagens Nyheter, together with Mandisa Zitha, Festival Director of Encounters South African International Documentary Festival.

Presented in collaboration with the Shahrazad project, Arenagruppen and CinemAfrica.
